What is a thread lift? Before and after pictures of the anti-aging cosmetic treatment

MANY people who are looking to hang on to their youthful looks are going for various cosmetic treatments.

One popular treatment is the thread lift which are all the rage on social media.

Stars such as Huda Kattan and Gwyneth Paltrow have been open about the smoothening treatment which serves as a temporary alternative to a face lift.

But how does it work and how long do the results last? Here's everything you need to know.

What is a thread lift?

Most people tend to get thread lifts in their foreheads, upper eyelids, brows, cheeks and jaws.

According to Healthline, the invasive procedure involves an esthetician inserting medical-grade thread material into your face and tightening the skin by pulling the thread taut.

Ashton Collins, director at non-surgical cosmetic treatments register Save Face, told Fabulous: "In safe hands, thread lifts are an effective way of reversing the signs of ageing and lifting areas of the face without going under the knife.

"Anyone considering a thread lift should only seek out appropriately trained and insured healthcare professionals.

"More than 80 per cent of complaints we receive are regarding treatments carried out by non-medics and lay people and because they are unaccountable, redress is very unlikely."

How does it work?

There are two main types of thread used in these procedures according to SAS Aesthetics.

Regenerative threads smooth the complexion while also stimulating collagen production which reinforces the skins’ natural structure.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahsa Saleki described how "lifting threads are a more complex design which act in a Velcro manner to lift the skin without any sutures."

The procedure tends to take about 45 minutes and can take up to a week to recover.

What can thread lifts do?

  • Create a brow lift effect
  • Lift, reshape and define the nose
  • Define & raise the cheekbones
  • Disguise marionette lines
  • Sculpt & lift lips
  • Lift & contour the jawline / jowls
  • Lift the neck
  • Reduce the appearance of acne scarring

If you book in for the treatment, the aesthetician will apply anaesthetic to your skin before inserting the threads with a thin needle or cannula.

You may feel a tightening under the skin and experience bruising, swelling and pain the area the thread was inserted in the weeks after.

Dr Mahsa Saleki says the results can last anywhere from nine to 18 months.

How much does it cost?

The price of the treatment varies depending on how many threads are inserted.

Cosmedics UK charge £800 for two threads and up to £2,400 for 10.
